Derby Buyer's Guide
Elite Equine Marketplace connects riders and trainers with hunter derby horses for sale from trusted professionals, trainers, and sellers across the globe. Hunter derby horses require a rare and specific combination of natural scope, flowing hunter movement, adjustability in the handy round, and the athletic ability to jump high option fences โ qualities that make a true derby horse one of the most valuable and sought-after horses in the hunter world.
The USHJA offers three distinct hunter derby programs, each designed for different levels of horse and rider:
The USHJA International Hunter Derby is the peak of hunter competition. Courses are set at 3'6"โ4'0" in the Classic Hunter Round, with high option fences set at a minimum of 4'0" โ giving horses and riders the opportunity to earn bonus points for scope and bravery. The Handy Hunter Round follows, rewarding horses that can gallop, rate, and turn brilliantly across a course of natural-style obstacles including banks, ditches, logs, coops, stone walls, and natural foliage.
The annual Platinum Performance/USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship is held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky โ in 2025, the Championship offered $235,550 in prize money with 30 horses advancing to the prestigious Handy Round final in Rolex Stadium. Any horse enrolled in the IHD program is eligible to compete in the Championship. The 2026 Championship returns to the Kentucky Horse Park on August 14-15, 2026.
All horses must be USHJA enrolled to participate in an IHD class ($450 annual enrollment fee). The program consists of IHD classes held throughout the year, six regional championships across the country, and the annual championship. The program also features a Rider Ranking System (Tier I, II, and III) based on previous year's money-won standings, providing additional prize money opportunities for developing riders.
Amateur and Junior sections are recognized within the IHD program โ at the 2025 Championship, separate awards were presented for the Top Amateur Owner rider and the Top Junior Owner and Rider, making the IHD accessible and rewarding for non-professional competitors as well as professionals.
The USHJA National Hunter Derby was launched in 2010 as a stepping stone to the International Derby level, with courses set at 3' and high option fences at 3'5". The National Derby is judged in the same two-round format as the International Derby โ a Classic Hunter Round followed by a Handy Hunter Round โ making it the perfect introduction to derby competition for horses and riders developing toward the IHD level.
The National Derby program includes six regional championships held throughout the year and an annual championship at the Marshall+Sterling/USHJA National Championships in Las Vegas, where both an Open section and a Junior/Amateur section are offered. The National Derby is open to horses competing at Channel I (Premier and National) and Channel II (Regional) competitions, with minimum prize money requirements at each level.
A National Hunter Derby horse must have 3' jump height with scope for 3'5" high options, a naturally flowing hunter style, and the athleticism and rideability for the handy round. National Derby horses are ideal for professional riders developing a young horse, junior and amateur riders gaining their first derby experience, and trainers looking to build a horse's derby career from the ground up.
Debuting in the 2026 competition year, the USHJA 2'6" Junior/Amateur Hunter Derby is modeled after the prestigious National and International Hunter Derby programs and is accessible to any horse or pony registered with USHJA. Open to Junior and Amateur riders, the class follows a traditional two-round format with a Classic Hunter Round and a Handy Hunter Round, with high-option fences included in both rounds. This new division creates a derby pathway for junior and amateur riders competing at 2'6" โ opening the excitement and artistry of derby competition to a new generation of riders and horses.
Not every good hunter horse is a great derby horse. The qualities that define a truly exceptional derby horse are specific and relatively rare:
Natural scope and high-option ability: A derby horse must be able to jump high option fences at 4'0" and above in the IHD (3'5" in the National Derby) โ horses that lack genuine scope may compete at the base heights but will never score at the top of the class. The best derby horses jump the high options naturally and bravely, adding valuable bonus points to their score.
Hunter movement and jump style: Unlike jumpers, derby horses are still judged on hunter quality โ flowing movement, a flat and beautiful jump, correct leads, and the overall impression of an elegant, well-trained hunter horse. A scopey horse with poor movement or a rough jump style will never win a derby regardless of how many high options it jumps.
Handy round brilliance: The handy round is where derby classes are won and lost. The ideal derby horse is adjustable and responsive โ able to gallop between fences, rate smoothly to tight distances, execute clever turns, and trot a fence without tension or resistance. Horses that are safe and consistent in the classic round but truly shine in the handy round are among the most valuable horses in the sport.
Adjustability and rideability: Derby courses vary dramatically from show to show, and the best derby horses adapt to any course, any footing, and any track their rider presents. Rideability โ the quality of being easy, responsive, and pleasant to ride โ is essential for both professional and amateur derby riders.
The Platinum Performance/USHJA Green Hunter Incentive Program is the official pathway to International Derby competition, open to horses competing as a Green Hunter at 3', 3'3", 3'6", or 3'9". The program includes stake classes throughout the year, six regional championships, and an annual championship held alongside the IHD Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park. Green Hunter Incentive horses that develop through this program represent the future of the International Derby โ and green horses enrolled in or eligible for the GHI Program are among the most exciting and valuable investments in the hunter market.
